Sometimes the right ears hear the right story, thus we get the benefit of Marilyn Ryan's planning wisdom from her current location in Houston.  Marilyn was a Planning Commissioner extraordinaire here for many years. She sent this note via both Joice Beatty and John York who were also legendary at it. Much of what we enjoy today is because of the team on that Commission.

"Someone needs to remind the PC (Planning Commission)and CC (City Council) that including something like a Starr Ave extension in the Gen Plan does not require that it be constructed in the near future but that the R/W (right of way) be maintained for the City's benefit.  If the R/W is not protected, the City could face the cost of condemnation when the logical expansion eventually takes place.  One of the purposes of the place is to continue to provide a logical path forward, not to satisfy the immediate needs of a land owner/developer. After all it is a CITY - that's a place with social covenants - and it's their job to see that it continues to serve ALL of the CITIZENS now and into the future.  If they don't like that the should come down to Houston to see what the other side looks like.  See you soon, M."

On the Planning Commission Agenda for this Tuesday, 6 PM, Vintage Hall:  Thorn Hill wants to put their tasting room at the On the Vine location at Main and Hunt, making this question think piece for the week -- have we reached saturation on the wine tasting rooms yet?  The talk is starting to switch from "wine tasting room" to " bar" and the next question is, how many bars do we need in town? What else do we need? Do we have a lot of DUI's? Do we have to have a bigger police dept.? What happens when the bubble bursts? In the last 6 years the St Helena has permitted 19 tasting rooms within the Service Commercial and Central Business districts.
