1. Potshot planning -- the latest example
is the arrival of the 7th jewelry store in town. Apparently the
prospective merchants (who have 2 stores in SF) are quite proud of having
been "grandfathered in". In government-ese that means they
were given an "administrative approval" by the Interim Planning
Director -- which is the go-ahead without any review by the Planning
Commission or Council or a public hearing. It means they do not have
to qualify for a permit like any other new store. There was a protest
and now this issue will be heard at the Planning Commission tomorrow night,
7PM, Vintage Hall. Unfortunately, we are living in an era here of
having to be extra vigilant or living with the consequences -- no relief
either way.
2. Status of St. Helena's housing
compliance. Here is a White Paper on Housing by Steve Goldfarb
(the legal version) and here is the lay version of same (maybe easier to read
for non-attorneys). We have 9 months to go before the State looks at
the lack of our housing compliance and decides what to do about us.
So far almost nothing promised has been accomplished.
